The Round Table held by Fundesplai ‘Mental health in young women’, offered an open space to generate reflections and exchange discourses among the participants. It also provided a scenario to break down barriers, myths and stigmas in the field of mental health in young women. Thus, three axes were discussed: mental health and family, mental health and relationships, and self-esteem.
During the debates, the need not to stigmatize mental health was highlighted: “We must give it visibility in order to be able to face problems and not somatize them”, explained one of the participants. In this sense, Aina Lorenzo, a mental health activist, stressed that good mental health also influences good physical health.
The discussion tables also addressed relationships: “We must educate in limits and respect, especially young people”, as one of the participants assured. Another of the young women highlighted how the family can be a support to overcome mental problems, but, sometimes, it is an obstacle if this help is not done properly.
The event was also attended by Laura Sánchez and Blanca Destito, from SIAD Baix Llobregat, who closed the session with a talk on mental health and sexist violence.
Awka Program
At the end of the event, the Women’s Project was presented: Awka, an emotional support group for women who have suffered gender violence and want to start an empowerment process. This project aims to create a space of safety and support , working from the empowerment, self-esteem and autonomy of the participating women.
Awka works by promoting spaces for reflection and participation that value women’s knowledge and open the door to the exchange of experiences. Fundesplai organizes two weekly sessions where participants will have the support of two psychologists, guidance on legal issues and also activities such as self-defense.
On the other hand, participants are also offered a small training in equality and feminism, so that they can be agents of awareness in different spaces (institutes, entities, projects, etc.).

Fundesplai has promoted in recent years an important task of socio-labor inclusion of young people through different programs. Special relevance in the field of mental health of young women has been the Accompaniment to Adolescent and Young Mothers (AMA), which was launched in 2015.
So far, they have benefited from this pioneering initiative that offers parenting accompaniment, guidance and emotional support and training more than 300 young women, with children from 0 to 3 years old, who are in a situation of social isolation or socioeconomic difficulties.
It is also necessary to add in this area young women participating in other training and accompaniment initiatives promoted by Fundesplai, such as, for example, those framed in the Youth Guarantee. In 2022, a total of 92 young women are participating in these initiatives that combine socio-occupational inclusion with emotional accompaniment.
