Since 1975, the year in which the International Seminar on Environmental Education —the first international event dedicated monographically to environmental education— was held in Belgrade, World Environmental Education Day has been celebrated every 26 January.
As a result of the Seminar, the Belgrade Charter was published, which sets out the fundamental demands of environmental education and defines its objectives, which remain fully valid, even after contributions from the most recent congresses. The main goal of the Charter is to improve ecological relations, including that of humans with each other and between humans and nature. The spirit of the Belgrade Charter has now borne fruit everywhere.
In Catalonia, for example, more than 1,200 schools in the Network of Schools for Sustainability of Catalonia (XESC) have, among other purposes, that of promoting internal debate to advance in the conceptualization of education for sustainability in the field of educational centers.
Environmental education at Fundesplai
At Fundesplai, education for sustainability is a transversal axis of all actions: in esplais, in summer camps and nature hostels, in schools and in the activities it develops. Some examples are the Green Schools program, the land stewardship initiative or work camps, among others.
