In his statement, Josep Gassó emphasizes that although Fundesplai had to stop the activities carried out in the educational centers, the entity continues to serve the Generalitat de Catalunya, the city councils and the citizenship by putting its equipment and people at the service of the needs of the most vulnerable groups in this crisis.
Among other initiatives, the CENTRE ESPLAI shelter is taking in families and homeless people referred by different town councils in Baix Llobregat. That every day meals are being prepared and served for the elderly in social canteens of the Barcelona City Council. That three houses of Fundesplai are hosting unaccompanied foreign minors and that monitors of the entity are in a shelter in Maresme taking care of children from families where both parents are admitted by the COVID-19. Also the new portal YomeQuedoenCasawhich in the last few days has received more than 50,000 entries, in which Fundesplai centralizes all the proposals it is creating and offering to entertain and educate children and their families during confinement; to advise third sector entities and with proposals for distance learning.

In parallel, Josep Gassó also announces that part of the Fundesplai team is already preparing the activities for the end of the confinement. In particular, we are working on a large campaign of summer camps and summer camps for all the children of Catalonia. After weeks of confinement, the children will need to reconnect with their peers, make new friends, breathe fresh air and contact with nature. For this reason, an extensive range of activities is being prepared for all families and a solidarity campaign has already been activated to ensure that no child is left out and to make it possible for this to be A Summer for All because, according to Gassó: “The children need it, but so do we as a society”. That is why he has asked for the solidarity and commitment of everyone who wants to make a donation to this solidarity initiative.

Josep Gassó also addresses the nearly 3,000 workers of Fundesplai to whom he guarantees the payment of 100% of the payroll for the month of March: in some cases because they already work in services funded directly by the public administration, and in others so that, even if the Foundation is forced to make an ERTO, it will ensure that they have the same treatment: “The Foundation will guarantee the security of all workers”.
Finally Josep Gassó expresses his gratitude to the Generalitat de Catalunya and especially to all the health services that are at the forefront of this crisis; to the municipalities, to the entire educational community and to the members of the great family of Fundesplai, with whom he wanted to share a wish: “That from this crisis comes the opportunity to prioritize the values of the Foundation of mutual aid, sustainability and coexistence over economic values”.
