Jordi Turull was patron of Fundesplai (2003-2010) and is currently a member of its Advisory Board. He has also been a member and volunteer collaborator of Caritas and many other civil society organizations.

The Catalan Foundation of the Esplai (Fundesplai), with the support of the majority of entities of the Third Social Sector of Catalonia and representative people of the social, civic and voluntary world, have presented this Monday a request of pardon for Jordi Turull and Negre. The request is based on humanitarian reasons related to his family environment, as well as on the impeccable career in the service of civil society and democracy of the former Councilor of the Generalitat and a person always committed to the defense of the rights, freedoms and dignity of those who suffer situations of vulnerability or risk of social exclusion.

This request for a pardon to the Spanish Government has the support of organizations such as the Bureau of Third Social Sector entities of Catalonia (which brings together 33 federations, which represent and bring together more than 3,000 social initiative entities) and numerous representatives of the third sector in an individual capacity, as well as from the local world, and specifically, from all the mayors of his town, Parets del Vallès, since the municipal elections of 1979, and from the president of the Regional Council of Vallès Oriental.

These organizations and individuals, directly aware of Jordi Turull’s career and his actions consistent with the values of peace, democracy, social justice and freedom, make this request for the humanitarian reasons mentioned -the most direct relatives suffer very intensely this deprivation of liberty, affecting their health- as well as for considering that the sentence imposed is a serious restriction on freedom of opinion, expression and peaceful assembly, as has been repeatedly ruled by the United Nations and other accredited bodies in the defense of rights and freedoms.

In fact, the type of crime that has been applied in the Supreme Court ruling does not fit into any other similar figure in the countries of the European Union, since there has been no explicit violence, and it can be considered an anachronistic type of crime and potentially harmful for the citizens as a whole.

We believe that only through reasoned speech, dialogue and democracy can we move towards a society where there is no injustice of any kind  and where rights and freedoms can be fully enjoyed.
