At the end of 2013, the Advisory Board of the Esplai Foundation launched a new debate on the role of citizenship with the “focus” of “democratic quality”, which should culminate at the end of 2014 with the publication of the book “Citizenship and Quality Democracy”sixth volume of the collection Documents for Debate and is supported by the Obra Social de “la Caixa”.
This reflection began on 03/10/13 with the interventions of Iñaki Gabilondo and Josep Ramoneda in the plenary session of the Board of the Esplai Foundation, a statewide foundation. Subsequently, a virtual forum was opened in November and December and can be accessed through www.ciudadaniaycalidaddemocratica.org. Now, between the months of February and April, territorial debates will be held in person with special guests in Barcelona, Madrid, Bilbao, Valencia and Seville.
Thus, Barcelona will be the city where the first of these territorial debates will be held on Tuesday, February 4, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Palau Macaya (Passeig de Sant Joan 108, Barcelona).
The next territorial debates will be held in Madrid, Bilbao, Seville and Valencia before April 15.
A book that will be nurtured by many contributions
Subsequently, all the contributions, both from the online forum and the territorial debates, will be collected for the drafting of the book, which will be completed before the summer of 2014. Finally, between October and December 2014, “Citizenship and Democratic Quality” will be presented in different cities.
This initiative arises from the conviction of the Advisory Council of the Esplai Foundation that the crisis we are experiencing is not only economic. It profoundly affects our democratic system and the country’s basic institutions. We also agree that achieving the primacy of politics over the market and the regeneration of public life requires a greater role for citizens and changes in the rules of the game of our democracy.
