«Regulating advertising is a children’s right», this is how forceful the dietitian-nutritionist and disseminator Aitor Sánchez showed himself during his conference   «Advertising, food and childhood», held on Tuesday, October 18, at the headquarters of Fundesplai.

During his speech, the dietitian-nutritionist reviewed various aspects of the history of advertising, with special emphasis on how the advertising of unhealthy products (cookies or sugary cereals) has managed to influence the dietary decisions of young children. 

Sánchez was also very critical of certain “influencers” who  implicitly advertise unhealthy foods to their audience:   “if you advertise without warning you are not only cheating, but you are committing an illegality”.

A conference marked by the prominence of children and young people

The second part of the event featured a dynamic of questions to Aitor Sánchez posed by children and young people. Among the outstanding answers, Aitor Sánchez provided tricks to detect the Misleading advertising: “When we are presented with a beautiful product that works miracles, we have to start asking questions and see if it really is healthy or not. If they talk about biscuits that improve digestion or yogurts that strengthen our defences, let’s ask ourselves”.

To end the event, Aitor Sánchez collected the key points of his speech, focused on demystifying food advertising and being critical of the misinformation contained in many packaging: “Advertising makes us believe that we should eat special foods, and this is not the case. The food of a lifetime is what matters.”
