The Minister for Business and Labour, Roger Torrent, highlighted the agreement of the Government of Catalonia to include criteria in public procurement that prioritize healthy and sustainable food. Torrent made these statements during his visit to the headquarters of Fundesplai, in El Prat de Llobregat, where he was able to visit the exhibition “Menja. Acts. Impacta” accompanied by Josep Gassó and Cristina Rodríguez, president and CEO of Fundesplai respectively.

“The public administration must be a catalyst for a change in cultural habits that fosters a value chain much more in line with sustainability criteria”. With these words, Torrent referred to the agreement of the Government of Catalonia of May 31 that establishes that in the public procurement of food services, mainly quality products, fresh, seasonal, proximity and made with sustainability criteria are consumed, in order to guarantee a healthy diet and that generates the lowest CO emission2.Specifically  , this new framework, jointly promoted by nine departments of the Generalitat, will allow quality in competitions to have an 80% weight in the evaluation criteria, and the price only represents the remaining 20%.

During the speeches, Josep Gassó, president of Fundesplai, has valued very positively this step of the Government: “The agreement presented today is a very brave agreement. We urgently need decisive and impactful public policies that, in the face of a planetary emergency, ensure the health of people and the planet. And this is one of them.” And he assured: “from Fundesplai we are on the same path, helping to transform school canteens into educational spaces where sustainability and children’s health are  one of the central pillars of our action.”

It is worth highlighting in this sense the important work in food education that is being done from the entity to the educational time of schools, esplais and summer camps as well as through the exhibition “Menja. Acts. Impact” on sustainable and healthy food, which since its inauguration in November 2021 has already become a pedagogical reference in the field.
