On Sunday, November 20, the Universal Day of the Rights of the Child is celebrated and in Fundesplai we take advantage of this anniversary to claim the right to leisure, participation and equal opportunities for all children. A right that many children today and here still do not have guaranteed and that establishes the Convention on the Rights of the Child approved by the United Nations precisely on November 20, 1989.
40 esplais and 55 schools will hold events and cut streets to fill them with games
This initiative, led by Fundesplai and the Federació Catalana de l’Esplai, will involve more than 10,500 children, 40 esplais and 55 schools from different towns in Catalonia, as well as 10 entities from all over Spain.
Some of the 55 schools have been celebrating during this week and many will do so this Friday 18 at noon with a joint act consisting of which students will simultaneously dance in all schools the lib dub of the song “The School we want” by the group “Xiula”. In this way, we want to vindicate the right of boys and girls to express their opinion and be heard in aspects that affect them, such as education.
For their part, the 40 participating esplais will organize events throughout the weekend under the slogan #DretalLleure. In most cases, the events will consist of street closures to recover spaces for children’s leisure and games. In this link you can access the details of the activities organized by the esplais for this day.
Precisely to illustrate this campaign, a cartoon by the pedagogue and illustrator Francesco Tonucci, Frato, is used with the message “Sorry for the inconvenience, we are playing for you”.
Raise awareness and funds for children in greatest need
These mobilizations are taking place in a context in which in our country almost one in three children lives below the poverty line. According to the 2015 Survey on Living Conditions (INE-IDESCAT), the Arope rate of children under 18 in Catalonia is 31.7%. This compromises their access to food, care, training and leisure resources, which are closely related to the health, growth and happiness of children. For this reason, from Fundesplai, in addition to awareness campaigns, last year we awarded 16,000 grants and scholarships so that children with more social needs can access the dining room, camps, leisure activities and school reinforcement. But to continue, we need everyone’s collaboration! That is why we have the fundraising campaign open throughout the year “We take sides with childhood!” with which we ask that anyone who wants to volunteer, make a one-off contribution or become a member, do so by entering www.fundesplai.org/dona or by calling 93 551 17 71
