Last 26th of January, World Environmental Education Day, the EUKI project \u00abClimate Action to the Table\u00bb<\/strong> organised the talk \u00abSchool Agroecology: realities, challenges, and perspectives\u00bb<\/strong>. You can retrieve the talk at this link<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The first part of the event featured the participation of Germ\u00e1n Llerena, an environmental educator from the Environmental Department of Sant Cugat Town Council<\/strong>. His talk, entitled \u00abBeyond the vegetable garden\u00bb, focused on the importance of incorporating agroecology into the educational plan of a school and the need to bring farming into schools.<\/p>\n

In this sense, Llerena presented two of his books<\/strong> (written in collaboration with other authors), which include examples of schools or organisations currently practising agroecology in Catalonia<\/strong>. The publications are \u00abAgroecologia escolar<\/strong><\/a>\u00bb (Polen Ediciones, 2017), which can be downloaded free of charge; and \u00abTierra de aprendizajes. Doce bellas historias para la agroecolog\u00eda escolar en Catalu\u00f1a<\/strong>\u00ab, which will be available later this year.<\/p>\n

Some of the projects mentioned by Germ\u00e1n Llerena were that of Paid\u00f3s and Fundesplai<\/a>, which focuses on supplying organic food from the Collserola countryside to school canteens; Comemos Santos<\/a>, promoted by the Institut Sants secondary school, which has managed to create an organic consumer cooperative<\/strong> within the school; and that of the Escuela 21 de Abril<\/a> school, from La Aldea (Tarragona), which has devised an organic school garden<\/strong> that studies the differences with conventional agriculture in the village.<\/p>\n

\"EN<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Montse Escutia, an agronomist specialising in organic agriculture<\/strong> and coordinator of training activities for the Associaci\u00f3 Vida Sana<\/a>, closed the event. Escutia presented several educational resources<\/strong> for working at schools on the eleven axes that make up sustainable food: organic production, organic and extensive livestock farming, sustainable fishing, local consumption, seasonal food, short chains, fair trade, food safety, waste reduction, food waste and a healthy and sustainable diet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Some of the materials presented to work on the said areas were those of the Stop Malbaratar Comida<\/strong> proyect<\/strong>, promoted by Fundesplai and focused on food losses and waste; the school canteen season calendar<\/strong>, by the NGO Justicia Alimentaria<\/strong><\/a>; the video-story La guerra vegetal y el tomate perdido<\/strong><\/a>, by the Encinar School, focused on working on a healthy diet; and Correcull<\/strong><\/a>, an educational proposal by the schools of Alt Empord\u00e0 to collect food waste.<\/p>\n

The event also featured the participation of Luciana Lerho, consultant of the EUKI project \u00abClimate Action to the Table\u00bb<\/strong>. Lerho highlighted the aims of EUKI, an initiative promoted by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action since 2017. Its main goal is to improve intra-European cooperation on climate protection<\/strong> and green transformation.<\/p>\n

With more than \u20ac 70 million of funding<\/strong>, the programme has implemented 179 projects<\/strong> involving more than 300 organisations across the European Union<\/strong>. Other goals of the EUKI programme are to strengthen the role of civil society in climate action<\/strong> at regional, national and European levels and to create networks for the exchange<\/strong> of good practices.<\/p>\n

The EUKI consultant presented two successful projects in line with the theme of the event: \u00abClikis\u00bb<\/a> and \u00abClikis Network\u00bb<\/a>, developed in Germany, Poland, Croatia and Estonia. Both programmes, now completed, focused on making catering systems more environmentally friendly<\/strong>, considering both healthy and seasonal food<\/strong> and energy savings in school kitchens<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
